Dysphagia

Dysphagia is a symptom experienced by the patient and is prima facie evidence of swallowing dysfunction. The functional consequences are choking, aspiration, weight loss, and dehydration (Miller and others 2009a).

Saliva management

Manage in consultation with a speech pathologist (MND Australia 2011)

Oral hygiene

Mouth care is very important for people with MND who have swallowing difficulties (MND Australia 2010).

Choking

Choking attacks may be due to aspiration, impaired respiration, muscle spasm or stridor (due to acid reflux) (MND Australia 2011).
