International Symposium of ALS/MND 2010

Carol Birks attended the International Symposium of ALS/MND in Orlando last month. As always, a great deal of dedication and enthusiasm towards MND research and best practice management of symptoms was demonstrated by international delegates and those who presented papers.  Follow this link to Symposium abstract page.

Carol gave a presentation about MNDcare website at the Allied Health Professionals Forum (APF). The APF is a full day of presentations by international care professionals who have a special interest in MND.  The papers presented at this forum are very relevant to our subscribers and a summary will be provided when available on the International Alliance website.

Professor RG Miller, Medical Director of the Forbes Norris ALS/MDA Research Institute and co-author of the American Academy of Neurology's (AAN) paper on Evidence Based Practice Parameters for Managing Patients with ALS/MND  introduced the opening session.  He spoke about the AAN practice parameters, their strengths and limitations and the consequent important role of MND clinics and teams in addressing gaps in evidence based practice.  He identified gaps existing in the following areas:

  • Telling the diagnosis
  • End of life issues
  • Exercise, pain and spasticity
  • Falls
  • Equipment for mobility
  • Communication

The above areas offer scope for research if you or your co-workers are interested in evidence based research into MND management. Further highlights from the International meetings will be featured in MNDcare latest news during the coming months.
